Ok, here we go. Apple CEO Tim Cook has stepped out on stage. He’s wearing his normal jeans, button-up shirt and sneakers. The look among Apple execs -- and most people in Silicon Valley -- is super casual.
Cook: It's been an incredible year and tremendously busy already but we've got a few more things to share with you before we close out the year.
Audience applause is always a bit jarring at a press conference.
Cook: As you saw from the video, we had an amazing reception to the iPhone 6/6 Plus launch.
Cook: These phones are the best phones we have ever created.
Cook: The reviews have been off the chart. He shows a quote from Walt Mossberg.
To the right of the stage, an iMac (27-inch) and what looks like a MacBook Pro. But neither are covered with a drop cloth or otherwise obscured, so probably just for demo purposes, not new products.
Cook: It's no wonder that these iPhones have become the fastest selling iPhones in history. And the first 30 days, we have set a new high-water mark for the most orders taken, and I don't mean by a little. By a lot, a whole lot.
Cook: Our rollout around the world is going well. By the end of this week, we'll be in 32 countries. Just in a few hours from now, we'll launch in China.
Almost everyone who wants a smartphone in places such as the US and Western Europe now has one. That means Apple and Samsung, the kings of the mobile industry, have to look to developing countries such as China, India and Brazil for growth.
I wonder what such a quick launch in China will do to that infamous black market in iPhones we've heard so much about.
Cook: This is the very first time we've launched an iPhone on all three networks, and we're perfectly aligned to the early stages of LTE rollout in China. Preorders there have set a new record
Cook: This is our biggest iPhone launch ever.
Still no numbers though. Odd.
Wonder if he's waiting for earnings report on Monday
Cook: The iPhones also get the benefit of another major announcement we made last month. Apple Pay
Interestingly, even though it's not live yet, I've had clerks at stores like Whole Foods bring it up with me, unsolicited.
Cook: An entirely new way to pay for things in stores and apps. Built right into Passbook. Everything you need is built into iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. It's easy, it's secure, and yes, it's a private way to pay for things. We think it's going to be profound.
Cook: All three major networks supporting us and all of the nation's top banks.
Cook: Just since last month, have signed another 500 banks. They will be rolling out support later this year and early next year.
Cook: We have many of the largest retailers in the country supporting us. Since announcing last month, even more before the end of the year.
People have been trying to push "digital wallets" for so long, there's almost a kind of digital wallet fatigue, for hearing news about the subject.
Cook: Works online in apps. It's pretty simple. Find those pair of Beats headphones you want and boom, you've bought them. I've been wanting these a long time and Jimmy won't get me a pair
(he's referring to Jimmy Iovine, the co-founder of Beats brought on with the $3B Beats acquisition that closed in August)
But at the same time, I recently spoke to several, ahem, younger people (in the 20s and early 30s), who all swear by Venmo in particular.
Cook: We are beginning on Monday
So Apple Pay out in a few days
Cook: The journey begins and we can't wait.
Cook: Also last month we announced an entirely new category. Apple Watch. It's the most personalized device we've ever created.
Cook: It's just as much about personal expression as it is about functionality.
While something like Venmo may be a must-have for early adopters and young people, Apple Pay may be the digital wallet for everyone else. (Maybe.)
